The MSJC baseball team split a pair of games with Cerritos on Friday and Saturday as they began their 2026 campaign.
Friday, at home, the Eagles broke open a pitcher's duel in the bottom of the sixth inning when they erupted for five runs. Ty Mattson picked up the first RBI of the year with a perfectly placed bunt to get the scoring started. Will Siqueiros followed with an RBI single to right field to push the lead to 2-0. The next batter, Alex Pintal, hit a shot to the right-center field gap to score two runs and Ryan Rangel then drove him home with a sacrifice fly to left field. MSJC would tack on one more run in the bottom of the 8th when Pintal hit his second triple of the day driving home Mattson.
The pitching was outstanding on opening day for the Eagles as Gavin Warner, Kian Polk, and Tylor Copeland combined for the shutout. Warner went 5 innings allowing just two hits while striking out three. He was followed to the mound by Polk, who earned the win throwing two shutout innings. Copeland closed out the 9th forcing three straight fly outs.
Saturday on the road the Eagles lost a tough one as Cerritos earned the walk-off win in the bottom of the 9th. The two teams battled back-and-forth for most of the afternoon with the Falcons scoring the day's first run in the bottom of the fourth. MSJC answered in the top of the 5th with a pair of runs when Mattson had a sacrifice fly and Pintal earned an RBI single on an infield hit. Cerritos went back ahead 4-2 until the top of the 8th when MSJC once again tied up the game when Dayton Thompson drove a two-run single back up the middle. Cerritos however would score the winning run in the bottom of the 9th on the Eagles' only error of the day. The Falcons loaded the bases with one out and hit a ground ball in the infield that was played cleanly, but the throw sailed wide of the catcher allowing the winning run to cross the plate.
The 1-1 Eagles will be on the road for three games this week starting with a trip to Mt. SAC on Tuesday. Wednesday MSJC will be at Fullerton and then wrap up the week at San Deigo City on Saturday.
