The MSJC baseball team saw their season come to an end on Friday as they lost a pair of games in the 3C2A Regional Tournament hosted by Palomar.
In the first game of the day the Eagles came back to tie the game with Mt. SAC in the top of the ninth inning before forcing home the winning run in the bottom half when they hit a batter with the bases loaded.
MSJC trailed 2-0 after four innings but were able to get on the board in the top of the fifth when they took advantage of a Mountie error that allowed Ty Mattson to score. Then trailing 4-1 in the top of the eighth, the Eagles again rallied back cutting the lead to one with an RBI double from Steven Felipe and an RBI single from Ryan Rangel making the score 4-3 heading into the ninth. In the top of the ninth MSJC tied the game up with a squeeze bunt by Will Siqueiros that scored pinch runner Jordan Zamora. The Eagles' pitching, however, ran into some trouble in the bottom half of the ninth as Mt. SAC's Nick Mejia led off the inning with a double. The Mounties sacrificed Mejia to third and MSJC decided to intentionally walk the next two hitters to set up a force play at any base and a possible double play. Unfortunately, Eagles' pitcher Ivan Salas hit Foilan Serna with a pitch forcing home Mejia with the winning run.
The loss forced the Eagles right back into action an hour later in a must-win game against top-seeded Palomar. MSJC got a solid starting pitching performance from Gavin Warner as they trailed the Comets just 2-0 through six innings but the offense had a hard time getting anything going. Palomar finally broke through and tacked on five runs in both the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to win 12-0. The Eagles just managed one hit, a Matt Rezkalah single in the fourth against Palomar's pitching. MSJC did earn five walks, and Mattson had a stolen base in the loss.
The two losses end the season for the Eagles. They finished the year with an overall record of 22-20, they went 15-9 in conference play, which earned them a third-place finish.
