The MSJC football team was hit by three big plays early on Saturday as they lost on the road at Riverside City College 44-12.
The MSJC football team was hit by three big plays early on Saturday as they lost on the road at Riverside City College 44-12.
RCC scored on their first three possessions of the game, all on plays of 60 yards or more. The Tigers found the end zone on a 60-yard pass play, a 78-yard run, and an 88-yard run all in the first ten minutes of the game to build a quick 21-0 lead. The Eagles did eventually settle in on defense but were unable to ever really cut into the lead. Dojonni Bryant gave MSJC a boost early in the second quarter when he picked off a Tiger pass and returned it for 20 yards into the end zone for the Eagles only points of the first half. RCC did add a field goal before halftime to lead 24-6.
The Tigers would continue to build the lead in the second half as they scored twice more in the third quarter and once in the fourth to lead 44-6. The Eagles scored their only offensive touchdown of the game with 5:48 left to play when quarterback Cole Vasquez scored on a 1-yard run.
Vasquez finished the day completing 22 of 43 passes for 227 yards he was intercepted twice. Jackson Weng had a team high 8 receptions for 59 yards while both James Trevino and Brian Robinson caught 4 passes. On defense Eddie Smith had a team-high 9 tackles including 7 solos while Samuel Green made 7 tackles, two for loss. Giovanny Monge added a sack, and Tyson Roberts had an interception.
The Eagles are now 3-5 overall on the season and 1-4 in National Southern League games. MSJC will play their final home game of the season on Saturday when they host San Diego Mesa at 6 pm at HCN Bank Stadium.
