The MSJC volleyball team split their first two Inland Empire Athletic Conference contests of the year as they dropped a five-set match at San Bernardino Valley and swept a road match at Cerro Coso.
The Eagles started the week Wednesday with a trip to San Bernardino and promptly won the first two sets of the match 25-23 and 25-17. MSJC looked like they were on their way to a sweep as they built a six-point lead in the third, but SBVC rallied back to take the set 25-23. The Wolverines rode the momentum of the comeback to win the fourth 25-18 and then held off MSJC again in the fifth for a 15-13 match clinching win. Daija Malcolm led the Eagles with twenty kills and eighteen digs in the loss. Alena Magee knocked down nine kills while Angelina Browder passed out thirty-eight assists. On defense, Sophia Castro picked up eighteen digs.
Friday MSJC bounced back as they traveled to Ridgecrest where they swept Cerro Coso: 25-9, 25-20, and 25-23. Malcolm again led the offense this time with fifteen kills, Tala Paige Gurganious added eight kills in the win. Browder dished out thirty assists while on defense Castro had a team high ten digs and Magee had three solo blocks and a pair of block assists.
The Eagles who are now 7-8 overall on the season and 1-1 in IEAC action will play a pair of home matches this week. Wednesday MSJC welcomes College of the Desert to town and Friday the Eagles will host Victor Valley. Both matches on the San Jacinto Campus will start at 5 pm.
