The MSJC women's soccer team lost in dramatic fashion on Wednesday afternoon as they dropped a 5-4 shootout at San Bernardino Valley in the opening round of the 3C2A Regional playoffs.
A winner could not be determined in 120 minutes of action with regulation and the two extra 15-minute periods ending in a 1-1 draw, forcing the shootout.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard first just before halftime when Brooke Smith scored an unassisted goal in the 45th minute. The Wolverines would finally find the equalizer in the 84th minute to send the contest into overtime. Both teams threatened but could not score in the extra session leading to the match's dramatic conclusion.
The Eagles, who went first in the shootout rotation, made their first four attempts as Lorena Gonzalez, Maggie Arens, Nathali Gasca, and Haylee Chilton each found the back of the net. With a 4-3 lead MSJC was just one shot away from the victory but could not convert, SBVC answered to knot the score back at 4-4. The Eagles also failed to put the ball in the goal on their sixth attempt, and the Wolverines took advantage when Jacqueline Gonzalez came through with the winning shot.
